April
General Meeting
The
April General meeting was a lively one. After MBPOA business was
taken care of we had Jane Koropsak give us an update of happenings at
Brookhaven National Lab including bringing the advertisement for the
Summer Sundays Program at the Lab. This family event will be
occurring on July 14th, 21st, 28th
and August 4th. Go to www.bnl.gov
for more information.
Our
special guests for the monthly meeting were members Joe Fazzio and
Ketty Colbert. They gave an informative and inspiring lecture on
vegetable and flower gardening. The audience was very involved and
had lots of questions for Joe and Ketty to answer.
Thanks
to Joe Fazzio and Ketty Colbert for their time and enthusiasm.
Marina
Work
Repairs
began at Section 5 Marina on March 30th
. Demolition of the damaged
docks and sorting of wood and supplies was done by volunteer members.
The work was continued on subsequent Saturdays when the weather
cooperated. The latest work day was on April 27th.
Volunteers
will be needed thru May to begin with rebuilding. No expertise is
necessary. Call the clubhouse to volunteer. Thanks to everyone who
has helped already.
Rebuild
the Dunes Rally
On
Sunday April 21st
concerned citizens carrying colorful flags and balloons walked to the
area east of the Smith Point Campgrounds, behind Patersquash Island,
where the dunes have been totally washed away. These dunes have been
worn down by numerous storms over the last two decades. This past
year Super-storm Sandy and the ensuing and repeated nor'easters have
finally destroyed the dunes making this area of Fire Island
susceptible to wash-overs.
State
Senator Lee Zeldin, Assemblyman Ed Hennesey, County Legislator Kate
Browning, Mastic Beach Mayor Bill Biondi and Trustee Gary Stiriz all
made the long trek to the site to show support for rebuilding the
dunes and to let residents know what they are doing to rectify the
situation. All were surprised to see that the entire area of the
wash-over was closed off and not accessible because Piping Plover
season has begun. All expressed concern that protecting the Piping
Plover was taking precedent over protecting the residents of the
Peninsula. Ways to work around regulations protecting the birds to
start work on the dunes before October are being discussed.
The
dunes height is between 15 -20 feet lower at the site of the
wash-over than the dunes to the east or to the west. Area resident
Bob Mitterando spoke of growing up and coming to this area of the
beach and having to walk over three sets of dunes that were equal in
height to the dunes at the Smith Point Campgrounds. Many who grew up
here echoed what he had to say and questioned why these dunes have
been ignored for decades.
MBPOA
Director and Rally Organizer Maura Spery continued by saying “I
hope that this is the beginning of an open dialogue between all the
governmental agencies and area residents. We not only need plans for
Rebuilding the Dunes but we also need a Comprehensive Plan for those
of us living in the low lying flood plain. I hope that our elected
officials see fit to organize and create a committee or group which
includes the residents”.

Friday
Night Country Dancing
The
first and third Fridays are Country Dancing Nights at the club house.
Here is a note from Director Larry
Tellefsen :
Often
there are members or guests of members intently watching all the
different dances. The one thing most people do not realize is that
every dancer was once a beginner.
If
you are interested and would like to learn, lessons are available at
any number of Clubs, Adult Ed. Courses or even at other local civic
facilities.
Pete
and June currently have line dance lessons at the
Masury Ballroom in Center Moriches every Tuesday night
at 7PM.
Along with the three
dances taught at every dance, perhaps we can get some line dance
lessons at the MBPOA during the week.
Please address your
comments to the MBPOA Directors on what you think about this idea and
if you would like to participate or not.
Your thoughts are
important on how we may proceed.
Thank You!
Larry Tellefsen
MBPOA Director
Remember
that dancing starts at 7:30 and admission
is $8 for non-members and $6 for MBPOA members.
