October, November, December 2015 Newsletter

Newsletter Reformatting

I would like to apologize that we have not sent out a newsletter since September. A great deal of physical work has been been occurring in the last two months at the MBPOA and a great deal of upheaval in my personal life that there just wasn't time. I have come to the realization that a monthly newsletter is too often and not often enough depending on what information needs disseminating. In view of this the newsletter will be going through some changes in both format and frequency in the upcoming year. I would ask everyone who is interested in the goings on at the MBPOA to please bookmark our web pages and our blog and also to make sure you are signed up on our email list.

September, October, and November General Meetings

The September General Membership Meeting was on September 3. The guest speaker was Tom Kennedy from the COPE Community Liaison. The final reading for a by-laws change was made which would have changed the monthly meetings to every other month. A vote was taken by all present and eligible voters resulting in 2 – Yea, 18- Nay and 2 abstained. The proposal was voted down. The 50/50 was won by Shirley Jansen and donated back to the club. Thank you Shirley.

At the October General Meeting on October 1 the guest speaker was Suffolk County Legislator Kate Browning. There was a Village report from Mayor Maura Spery. Plans were made for the Autumn Nite at the Races and the Children's and Adults Halloween Parties. Tide tables were handed out to help everyone to prepare for any coastal flooding from the then up coming storm. The 50/50 was won by past President Gerry Riebe.

The November General Membership Meeting was on Thursday November 5. Our guest speaker was Village Trustee Betty Manzella who swore in our new director Fred Krage. A request was made for volunteers for the Election Commitee. Jean San Martin volunteered. We still need voting members to volunteer for this easy yet important committee. Plans were made for the holiday season. The 50/50 was won by Director Ketty Colbert.

December General Meeting

The December General Membership Meeting will be on Thursday December 3 and will be the MBPOA members only Christmas Party. There will be light fare provided. We ask that anyone who is able to please bring a dessert to share.

Please bring a donation for the MBPOA food drive and/or a donation for the Toys for Tots collection. Santa was contacted and has promised to make an appearance. If you want him to give a gift to a young someone who will be attending please bring it wrapped and labeled and give it to one of the board members at the party.

Hall Cleaning and Painting

After a couple hundred man hours the whole MBPOA clubhouse has been cleaned and repainted. New window valances have been hung and a new decorating plan is in the works. We hope to be having the floors refinished in the near future. We want to thank the volunteers who helped with all the work cleaning and painting. Volunteers are the lifeblood of the MBPOA.

Blue Claw Crab Festival Report

Our 11th Annual Blue Claw Crab Festival was a hugh success and the beautiful weather only made it better. After much planning since the beginning of the year and with the coordination of the MBPOA Officers and Directors and all the volunteers the event went off without a hitch.

There are many people we need to thank, but at the risk of leaving someone out, we are extending our appreciation and sincere thanks to everyone who helped with setting up the event site, did traffic control, and sold tickets. Thank you to the people who cooked the seafood, cooked the food for the volunteers, and served the food, beer and other beverages. Thank you to the clam shuckers, corn shuckers, and musical entertainment announcer. Thanks also to the people who sold raffles and merchandise and to the clean up crew who worked hours after the event.

Autumn Nite at the Races Report

It was a wonderful time at the Autumn Nite at the Races. The MBPOA served 99 roast chicken dinners and everyone enjoyed the video horse racing. The officers and Directors thank everyone who came to support the MBPOA at this important yearly event. We also thank all our volunteers who make it possible to have an event such as this: Bill Hack, Mike Giangrasso, Rich Wilkinson, Frank Delustro, Lynne Debona, Michael Kobasiuk, Barbara Fitzgerald, Kevin Collins, Barbara Collins, Sharon Tanzi, Traci Kelly, Jean San Martin, Maura Spery, Nancy Sorkow, and Catherine Kobasiuk. We ask forgiveness from anyone we may have missed mentioning and thank them also.

Marina News and Marina Pole Cover Refurbishing

The Halloween weekend saw a group of volunteers gather to power wash and replace the noodles on the marina pole covers. The marina pole covers are placed over the boat mooring poles in the marina to help prevent ice from forming around the poles during the winter and pulling the poles out of the mud. When the poles are pulled up the MBPOA has to hire a company to push them back in before they can be used by the boaters to tie up their boats.

Thanks to all our volunteers for their help preparing the pole covers.

The marina will be completely closed on Sunday November 15. All boats must be out by Monday or risk fines. We hope to be able to cover the poles that week and then the electricity will be turned off and there will be no lights either.

Halloween Parties

The 2015 Children’s Halloween Party was a tremendous success and possibly the biggest one ever! The kids enjoyed Tricks, treats, dancing, games, crafts and prizes for best costume! This party would not be possible without the following generous donations by: Zombie Sponsor: Town of Brookhaven Supervisor Ed Romaine, Food Sponsor: Town of Brookhaven Councilman Dan Panico, Pumpkin Sponsors: Village Trustee Elizabeth “Betty” Manzella, Candy Sponsor: Suffolk County Legislator Kate Browning, Decor Sponsor: Friends of Shirley and the Mastics Jon Siebert, Ghost Sponsor: Mayor Maura Spery, Costume Contest Sponsor: New York State Assemblyman Dean Murray, Face-Paining Sponsor: Village Deputy Mayor Bruce Summa Thank you to all who volunteered especially:
Dean Murray and his intern, Mary Anne Valentin,
Josephine, Madeline, John, Noreen, and their friend and her son.
Thank you also to Brayden, Lorraine, Arik, Little John, Ryan,
Barbara Fitzgerald, Michelle, Jean, Maura, Betty, and Nora.

The Adult's Halloween Party was a little quieter than the Children's Halloween
Party but only a very little bit. The karaoke machine got a good workout by the
costumed members who celebrated at the clubhouse bar for the evening.
Everyone kept an eye on the Mets in the World Series too. Thanks to everyone
who stopped by.
