NOVEMBER 2013 NEWSLETTER

Editor: Catherine D. Kobasiuk Assistant: Marina Kobasiuk

October General Meeting

The October general meeting saw a great deal of group discussion. First however, we opened with the pledge, roll call, and the financial reports. Things swiftly moved on to the committee reports. The nominating committee has been arranged and Director Maura Spery is on it if you have any suggestions or questions. The budget committee is working on the new budget. Financial Secretary Lynne Debona apologized to Vic Viola for leaving him out of the thank you's from the Crab Fest last month.

President Jean San Martin offered additional thank you's to Directors Michelle Wilkinson and Bob Muse for taking down the ropes at Washington Beach, Director Bob Muse for ordering the replacement for the broken window, and Financial Secretary Lynne Debona for doing the curtains and painting the front door. The 50/50 was $20 and was won by Maureen Dimeo.

After the usual business was concluded Director Maura Spery presented an explanation of the NY Rising Committee which she and Vice President Michael Kobasiuk sit on. She explained that this committee's job was to decide what money would go to which communities and how it would be spent in those communities. She then showed some maps of Mastic Beach and asked for any and all input on what our members think the community of Mastic Beach needs. There were a lot of ideas and discussion which Director Maura and Vice President Michael are sure to take back to the NY Rising Committee.

Kiwanis of the Mastic's Harvest Festival

The MBPOA had a table at the Kiwanis' event at Moriches Elementary this month. The Directors and Officers who manned the table were glad to see some of our members come by to say hello. We were also very happy we had the opportunity to answer questions from Mastic Beach residents and our nearby neighbors about our organization. All of our members should spread the good word about the MBPOA.

NY Rising Communities Fall Conference

On Wednesday October 23, 2013, MBPOA Director Maura Spery and MBPOA Vice President Michael Kobasiuk both of whom are members of the NY Rising Communities Committee drove up early (as did other members of NY Rising) to Albany to attend the NY Rising Communities Fall Conference at the Empire Plaza Conference Center. The morning session had presentations from six downstate communities. The afternoon session had presentations from six upstate communities. Governor Cuomo attended both sessions and was very attentive and asked many intelligent questions of the presenters.

Following the conference Maura and Michael went to the invitation only reception at the Governor’s Mansion. They were able to engage in meaningful conversations with committee members from other hard hit areas, elected officials from all over the state and administrators of the NY Rising Program.

They were happy and proud to represent Mastic Beach when introduced to Governor Cuomo and had their pictures taken with him.

Pictures of Maura and Michael at the Governor’s Mansion and the setup for the conference can be viewed at the following address in the set labeled NY Rising Communities Fall...:

New York State Required Safe Boating Course

The classes given by Rich King for the Safe Boating Course were very well attended. There were 40 members who spent the two nights learning a lot of useful information. All the attendees passed and received their certificates. If you still need your certificate we are planning to schedule two more classes. One after Christmas and another around Easter time. Thanks to Dir. Kevin Collins for helping arrange the classes.
