February
General Meeting
The
General Membership Meeting was on February 6. Vice President Michael
Kobasiuk presided due to President Jean San Martin being out of town
to tend to her ill mother. Following the salute to the flag and roll
call our guest speaker Inspector Neubauer of the 7th
Precinct was introduced. He was accompanied by Sargent Doyle also
of the 7th
Precinct. The inspector gave a report on the types and amount of
crimes in the Mastic Beach community and the 7th
precinct. A number of local residents asked questions about
specific problems and general needs of our community.
Following
the guest speakers talk the meeting continued with our usual
business. There was a reminder for the NY
Rising
meeting on February 12 and discussion on an article that appeared in
the January Long
Island Fisherman
saying
that Fish
and Wildlife
would like to flatten the dunes more. Director Kevin Collins
reported that there have been 15 new rentals for boat slips.
Director Larry Tellefsen reported that Country
Dancing
is doing well and he needed help with opening up on Monday for Dance
Lessons. Financial Secretary Lynne DeBona gave everyone the rundown
on the Nite
@ the Races
plans for March 15.
Director
Maureen Getchell told everyone that her daughter Nora is home and
doing well. She reminded everyone that there will be a blood drive
at St.
Judes
on February 23 for Nora. [Which is being run by Bill Doyle's Knights
of Columbus group.] Bill Doyle (assistant to Senator Lee Zeldin)
then asked that if anyone was having any problems with NY
Rising that
they should speak to him so he could report back to Senator Zeldin.
Director
Maura Spery commented on the article she was mention in in Newsday.
Director Larry Tellefsen recapped his email to Newsday
in response to their article. Then he asked for support in
protecting the mute swans from Fish
and Wildlife
who want to eradicate them on Long Island. Director Michelle
Wilkinson explained that Best
Buddies
is a
global volunteer movement that creates opportunities for one-to-one
friendships, integrated employment and leadership development for
people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and
asked people to support their local chapter fund raiser at Ladakins.
The
50/50 was $20 and was won by Larry Tellefsen. The meeting then
adjourned for coffee and cake.
