January 2014 Newsletter

A Letter to Our Members

Happy New Year! [That is what you say this time of year. One thing you do, is remember the year that is passing. This is a difficult thing for us locally.] This time last year we were only two months out from Super Storm Sandy and still trying to get our feet under us. It has been a long year with a great deal of work and struggle for many of us and our friends and neighbors. Many of us have a long way to go before we can feel that we have put Super Storm Sandy behind us. We may get depressed seeing what we have and have not accomplished this past year and we may get discouraged visualizing what still needs doing. This is even true for people not recovering from a natural disaster. We always feel that we have not done enough and would like to plan to do more by making resolutions for the New Year.

In only focusing on what we have or haven't accomplished at home or at work we are missing out on the most important point of the New Year. The writer G.K. Chesterton said it best,

“The object of a New Year is not that we should have a new year. It is that we should have a new soul and a new nose; new feet, a new backbone, new ears and new eyes. Unless a particular man made New Years resolutions, he would make no resolutions. Unless a man starts afresh about things, he will certainly do nothing effective.”

In other words the New Year is a chance to change ourselves, the most important part of the world. In resolving to change ourselves we will be changing the world around us. We need to consider changing our outlook and how we speak of our situations, because words have power. A positive helpful attitude can overcome more than we can imagine. We at the Mastic Beach Property Owners Association want to be part of the positive resolutions in our members and neighbors lives this year. There is still a lot to do in our homes and town but there is as much to do inside of ourselves also. Just like last year there will be more than work to do, there will be friends to make, neighbors to help, and fun to be had. Our resolving to speak different , feel different, BE different is what will make 2014 different in all the important ways.

We will leave you with one more quote about the new year by the writer T.S. Eliot,
For last years words belong to last years language
And next year”s words await another voice.”

The Officers and Directors of the Mastic Beach Property Owners Association wish you and yours a Happy and Healthy New Year.

December General Meeting

As is the custom of the MBPOA the General Membership Meeting in December was a Christmas/Holiday Party. The lead organizer for the night was Director Michele Wilkinson. The Board of Directors and Officers decided to go with a slightly different plan this year in the hopes of getting more of the general membership involved in preparing and planning for the party. The party was planned as a pot luck with the club supplying beverages and desert. Thank you to the team of decorators, Catherine and Marina Kobasiuk, and Michele and Braydon Wilkinson.

Vice President Michael Kobasiuk made sure that the sound system was working and Catherine Kobasiuk brought her Christmas CD's to play. All of which had been submerged in Super Storm Sandy the previous year but were quite alright to play after being rinsed off. Thank you to Director Kevin Collins for making punch to drink and tending the bar. Thank you to Director Maura Spery for setting up the chaffing dishes so that the hot food was kept warm and to all of the servers and kitchen helpers. Thank you to President Jean San Martin for picking up the cake and Director Ketty Colbert for making coffee.

Pat at toydocter@verizon.net was in attendance taking family portraits and pictures with Santa Claus when Santa stopped by for a little while to visit with the children. A special thank you to all of our members who attended and brought such delicious and interesting foods. Another big thank you too all the wonderful people that helped clean up, you know who you are but your names were drowned in the punch bowl by the end of the evening.

If any contribution was omitted it was by accident, not design and we apologize and blame the Christmas cheer. Pictures of the event can be found at our Flickr site.

Meet & Greet Fridays

Every Friday night is a get together at the Clubhouse. The bar is open to our members and their guests and this is a good opportunity to meet new people, play darts, enjoy card games, or just enjoy conversation. Light fare is available at a small cost to cover expenses.

We are sorry to say that the prices at the bar have been raised. For a number of years we have been absorbing the price increases from our suppliers. We can not continue to do so and so have raised the prices just enough so that we may continue to maintain a well stocked bar for the enjoyment of our members.

The price increase will go into effect on January 1, 2014. The new bar rates will be as follows:
  • beer, wine and liquor will be $3.00 for members
  • $4.00 for private parties

Any changes to the schedule will be available on our Twitter and Facebook page.
