Nite at the Races Report

This years Spring Nite at the Races on March 15 was a bustling and festive success. The anticipated crowd was swelled to larger ranks just as the doors opened. The traditional theme of St. Patrick's Day was in evidence with the green decorations and the generous use of green clothing by the happy attendees. The festivities began with a welcome by MBPOA President Jean SanMartin. Corned beef and cabbage was on
the menu thanks to the hard work of our kitchen staff headed by Director Bill Hack; including Pat Hack, Dir. Mike Giangrasso, Dir. Kevin Collins and Dir. Ketty Colbert. Tickets had been designed and sold by Catherine Kobasiuk and Lynne Debona; Lynne soldiered through the task of arranging seating. Vice President Michael Kobasiuk and President Jean San Martin helped arrange the tables. The Kobasiuks, prepared and ran the audiovisual elements while Dir. Barbara Fitzgerald sold raffles and 50/50 chances. The beer kegs were set up by Dir. Kevin Collins and Dir. Larry Tellefsen and our local signage was put up by Dir. Peter Costello and Dir. Frank Luisi. The betting table was run by Dir. Maura Spery with aid from Nancy Sorkow, Dir. Larry Tellefsen and Catherine Kobasiuk.

The 50/50 and the membership raffles were hand picked by Marina Kobasiuk and Denise Giangrasso. The 50/50 was won by a lovely lady named Pat. The $250 prize was won by member John Bivona and the $500 prize was won by Dir. Larry Tellefsen.

Thank you to everyone who came and who help make our Spring Night at the Races a wonderful success.

Come and Join In

Now that spring is here there will be a number of outdoor projects that will need volunteers. Director Frank Delustro has expressed a need for people willing to help with the repair of the stick docks on Patersquash Creek. There will be the usual clubhouse cleanup day which is good for students to accumulate volunteer hours. Brookhaven Town has scheduled their Great Clean Up for May 17. We have volunteered to clean up the southeast corner of Havenwood Drive and William Floyd Parkway. If you are interested in helping out on any of these projects please call the clubhouse and leave your name and number, 399-6111.

 Volunteer of the Month
Director Maura Spery

This month we will be highlighting Director Maura Spery as she steps down as a MBPOA director to assume her new responsibilities as a Mastic Beach Village Trustee.

Maura Spery has been a director of the MBPOA since 2006. She has been Chairperson of the Quality of Life Committee, helped created Music by the Bay in 2007 (an annual free outdoor concert for the residents of Mastic Beach). She has organized fundraisers for William Floyd High School Drama Department Musicals, and participated as Master of Ceremonies for Main Stage of all Music by the Bay/Blue Claw Crab Festivals from 2006 to present. Following Super Storm Sandy she organized 600 hot meals to be served at the MBPOA clubhouse while it was opened as a warming center. Maura organized a January cleanup of the Mastic Beach waterfront and wetlands with over 200 volunteers and spearheaded an April Rally to “Save the Dunes” focusing the attention of all local politicians to the devastation of the Fire Island Dunes that directly affect Mastic Beach.

Maura has also volunteered throughout the community for a number of projects including the Grace Lutheran Church Community Garden, combats graffiti on the Pattersquash Bridge, and annually paints the lighthouse on Neighborhood Road. All of which culminated with this years political race and election to the Village of Mastic Beaches Board of Trustees. Maura plans to continue being a member of our 85 year old organization.

The Officers and Board of Directors of the MBPOA would like to thank Maura for all her hard work and wish her all the best in her new position as Village Trustee.
