Country Dancing
Article by Larry and Elyse Tellefsen.
E In general, any type of a dance is a friendly social activity where people meet and have some fun. The low pressure atmosphere of our Country Dances brings an energy into the room where the Clubhouse comes alive. You can come to watch, dance or try out the new popular dance craze. In continuing with the MBPOA’s 85 year mission of community Good Will and Welfare, the MBPOA has held a regular monthly Country Dance for the more than a year and a half.

Country Dancers

This activity has been so positive, that we’ve added a second dance for every month. Beginning April 2013, from 7:30 to 11:00 PM, the MBPOA will have a Country Night on the 1st and 3rd Friday’s of each month. With 3 lessons taught at each dance, it’s your opportunity to come out and get involved in a friendly social life filled with good will and good health. These dance nights are for pure fun and enjoyment with little to no room for politics. Our dances attract people from Kings Park to Amagansett. These dancers come here for more than a dance. They also come to discover a Historic and Scenic Mastic Beach where people are nice, fun and friendly.

March 2013 NEWSLETTER

Editor: Catherine D. Kobasiuk     Assistant: Marina Kobasiuk

Super Bowl Party
Members had a great time watching the Baltimore Ravens win the 2013 Super Bowl. There was quite a lot of food brought by various people to share with the crowd. Kevin and Barbara Collins organized everything wonderfully, including supplying a large hero. The children entertained themselves while the grownups chatted and critiqued the commercials and the half time show. Even the blackout in New Orleans did not dim the fun at the MBPOA Clubhouse on February 3rd.

William Floyd High School Musicians Romance Valentines Day

The 2013 Friday Night Music CafĂ© opened with a magical night of music and dance as the William Floyd High School Jazz Ensemble under the direction of Michael Cordaro and the High School Mens Acapella group, the Soundsations directed by Barbara D'Orio, stole hearts and ears as they serenaded the crowd. They showed their pitch perfect combination of standards, oldies and contemporary music that has earned them well deserved accolades throughout the County. The Valentines Day Dance raised over $500 through ticket sales, 50/50 raffle and bake sale items, which will help to support performing arts activities for William Floyd High School students.

Thanks to all the member volunteers and to Cathy Meinhold and her team for putting on a great event. Look for Cathy and her crew to be hosting open mic night on the 4th Friday of every month.

Atlantic Community Activity Center
On February 21st the Atlantic Community Activity Center Board of Directors met at the Mastics, Moriches and Shirley Community Library. They held elections for seven new directors for the board. Amongst the candidates was Nancy Sorkow an active member of the MBPOA . We are happy to say that Nancy was elected to the ACAC Board of Directors. We wish her lots of luck in helping make the ACAC a great success and in continuing in Bob DeBona's footsteps.

Seventh Precinct
Community Open House

The Suffolk County Seventh Precinct will be holding a community Open Houses at the Mastics Moriches Shirley Community Library on the third Thursday of the month at 7:00 PM.

This month we have a report by Jean SanMartin.

The inspector spoke about the change of location.  It was recommended that it be held in a more friendly place, where residents can feel comfortable with questions and speaking to the COPE officer.

1.  On Friday, 2/15/2013, they arrested a felon by Marina One, who had stolen a vehicle, crashed the car and then took off running toward the Marina, when he was caught by the K-9 unit.

2.  The police caught "in action", a male and female, who were pumping out home fuel oil from vacant homes and reselling it on the street.  At the time of arrest, the thieves confessed to taking home oil from (7) homes in the tri-hamlet area.

3.  A male was arrested for stealing copper piping and metal from vacant homes and reselling it to Gershow Recycling.  He was pulled over for suspicious driving on Wm Floyd Pkwy and the police noted burglary tools in his car with some copper piping.  Upon checking records at Gershow, the thief had made over $30,000.00 in just a couple of months.
